Lorenzo
Milani
Lorenzo Milani was born on 27th May in 1923 in Florence. He
was much loved and much criticized as a man. He believed that the poor
would become poorer without any basic notion of reading and writing.
For this reason he started a full-time school in Barbiana, whose main
aim was to offer linguistic education to the young. Lorenzo stayed in
Barbiana until his death at his mother’s house on 24th June
1967, when he was just 44 years old.
His
main works are:
Pastoral Experiences,
Lorenzo Milani, Florence, L.E.F. 1958; it’s a book about the true
meaning of consciousness and obedience
A
Letter to the Judges,
Florence, 1965
A
Letter to a Teacher,
Barbiana
School, Florence, L.E.F. 1967; the book was published seven weeks before
his death. It’s the spiritual heritage of a “prophet without any weapos”
